My First Time

My first blog...This won't be pretty. I am surfacing from an unbelievable stretch of difficulties.

I have been caregiving in my home for six years for my mother and then my husband in wheelchairs, while working full time. During that time, I also had a broken hip. Now for the good news.

They are both in nursing homes now, and I have retired from work. So my situation has changed remarkably in just the last two months. I feel literally like I have been freed from prison. Instead of being on duty, or at least on call, 24-7-365, I have entire days I can structure as I please. I can sleep without being awakened, and wake up when I want to. I can eat what and when I please, without worrying about dietary restrictions for diabetes. I can be in the house with few or no clothes on, because there are no health aides here. I do not have to deal with urinals, insulin shots, managing 20 daily medications, or taking off work to go to numerous doctor's appointments. I revel in each new day, instead of dreading it.
